Telemedicine during the COVID 19 pandemic

I wanted to share a few thoughts in regard to starting telemedicine during this time of crisis.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE PRACTICING WITH TELEMEDICINE!!!!!  However, I feel that is very important for veterinarians to do their homework first before implementing telemedicine in their practice.  I recommend researching which companies are out there and decide how you want to use this modality.  Do you want to just do videochats or do you want to charge for phone consultations, or do you want to implement texting/emails with videos and pictures?  Lay out a plan, talk with your staff on how you want to use telemedicine, and if you need help implementing it, I suggested sending me a message or pick a company that has been doing it successfully for a while to help you.  Make sure you have researched the law in your state, double check with your liability carrier to make sure you are covered, make sure you have a secure way to exchange medical information,  and lastly make sure you can document all exchanges with your clients.  Hope this advice helps some of you interested in starting this awesome way of communicating and servicing your clientele.

Move the profession forward using telemedicine in a moral and ethical manner.

Be an educator in my profession to help bridge the gap between technology (telemedicine) and practicing veterinarians.

Building helpful and productive strategies for incorporating telehealth into our practices.

Work to bond future veterinarians and teaching hospitals with practicing veterinarians with the use of teleconsulting.
